Thanks to modern dental technology, teeth straightening is made possible without going through the inconvenience of traditional braces. Welcome to the world of Invisalign aligners! Made from a clear and thermoplastic material, Invisalign aligners are custom-made to fit your teeth. One of its advantages is having the ability to take it out whenever you eat and drink – but that doesn’t mean you’d stop caring for them!
Keeping your aligners clean is the only way to keep your aligners odorless and germ-free. Without careful care, your aligners can smell bad, discolor, and build up deposits of plaque and bacteria that can erode at the enamel of your teeth.
For optimum results, proper handling and care of your Invisalign aligners are important. Follow these dos and don’ts in taking care of your aligners:
Do:
Whenever you take them out, rinse your aligners thoroughly under running water. This will wash away bacteria, saliva, and food particles that create a breeding ground for foul-smelling bacteria. Make sure to wash with cold water to get rid of any stains.
Invisalign offers specialized cleaning crystals to soak your aligners in regularly. Denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, and the official Invisalign cleaning crystals are all excellent options for keeping the aligners sanitised.
Your teeth need to stay clean, too! Be sure to brush and floss your teeth regularly to prevent the buildup of plaque and bacteria under the aligners. Proper oral hygiene is key to maintaining healthy teeth and avoiding cavities and decay. Since Invisalign is form-fitted, failing to brush and floss properly can trap harmful particles between your teeth and aligner, which increases your risk for dental issues.
This is a great way to keep your aligners free of bacteria and plaque. Clean your aligners with a clear antibacterial soap. A clear antibacterial soap is an excellent and inexpensive way to keep your aligners clear, fresh, and free from harmful bacteria.
You can use a toothbrush to gently brush your aligners with non-abrasive toothpaste. Ideally, you want to brush them every time you take them out or put them back in – but be careful, as overzealous brushing can leave visible marks and scratches. Vigorous brushing can scratch your aligners and leave visible etchings.
Don’t:
Foods and colored drinks can stain your aligners and leave an unpleasant smell, so stick with water while you’re wearing them.
Many types of toothpaste (especially those with whitening agents) are harsh and can dull your aligners.
Scented and coloured soap can stain the aligners so it’s best to avoid using those.
Aside from the possibility of misplacing them, leaving your aligners unattended exposes them to harmful germs and bacteria. Rinse and soak thoroughly before putting back the aligners to your mouth.
